Listen to the New Chinese | Traditional-Styled Music

The new Chinese traditional styled music integrates the traditional Chinese elements such as classical Chinese poetry, Chinese operas, traditional music instruments, and pentatonic scale of orientalism with pop music.

The song "惊鸿一面", is exquisitely arranged, especially with various levels of harmonies between man and woman voices interacting with each other. More amazingly, the imaginative arrangement of ancient Guqin is a colorful touch to the melody. When listening to the song, you will find yourself walking to in the rain and mist of the River south, where you safely open up your hearts. The song has been widely sung among people and later it was listed in the must-have background song list to editors.

The song "如果当时" tells a love story that a couple who both love poetry facing breaking up. You can taste the sorrow from the lyric such as if we were just acquainted, my heart would not be saddened by the parting. One highlight is the Peking opera style singing adding a retro and graceful touch to the song. Following the flow of the tune, plunking of jazzy guitar and performing retro folk music in turns, you might find yourself having a time and space mind travel with a stark emotional contrast between the verse and chorus in past and present.

Chang’e is a goddess who lives on the moon from Chinese ancient myths. Chinese folk music sets the tone for the intro part of the song of “嫦娥”. Once the Guzheng or Chinese zither is plucked, instantly you would appear in a corridor separating reality and fantasy. While you listening on, there comes other music styles like electronica, classic, and Triphop, as if a thick mist enshrouding you thus you lost your way. The song pays tribute to the moon and Goddess Chang’e and the song writer’s longing to dance with Chang’e on the moon. In the end of the song backed up by rock music which is perfectly fused to the tune, the moon rises slowly, Chang’e and the secular world make an agreement to see each other again on 2034.

“青山白云” is a great integration of Chinese style music with western music instruments. There are few typical images of idyllic life in the lyrics worshiped by the Chinese for long, such as thin wisp of smoke from households at sunset, chatting farm work over rice wine drinking, appreciating a view of white clouds floating among green mountains. It both tells one facet of traditional way of living in China and a common yearn to be in it. As an old saying goes the sky is unlimited for birds to fly at ease and the ocean is boundless for fish to leap at will. I believe it’s an ideal state of living all human kinds wish for.

The song lyric of “北冥有鱼” is adopted from A Happy ‎Excursion, the opening piece from book of Zhuang Zi. The entire text shows unique imagination and romance. It highly praises the high-spirited and vigorous of the young men and their dream pursuing without restraint. The first half of the lyric describes their sensitive and reserved state of minds and the latter half writes about their great ambitions, all of which to sing high of the spirit and aspiration of the young. In term of music, it uses simple and unadorned words to profile the frankness and straightforwardness of the young people, exhibiting the youthful spirit.

The Yellow Crane Tower is a poem written by the poet from Tang Dynasty 1300 years ago and passed down till now. The Yellow Crane Tower mentioned in the poem is located in Wuhan city, which was built 1800 years ago and yet a landmark architecture of the city. The song lyric is the poem itself. Not only it sings out the beauty of landscape depicted in the poem but also presents the beauty of Chinese history and culture in modern music.

The song is creating romantic and graceful world with Chinese style, using tactful and melodious tune to go with many life images like blossom March, appreciating the sound of cicada, drizzle, and sailboat from afar, an expression of longing for a beautiful future.
